Financing case Vents du Kempt: 101 MW wind farm in Canada
KfW-IPEX Bank is involved in a forward-looking financing structure and is supporting environmental and climate protection projects with a credit to construct and operate the Canadian wind farm "Vents du Kempt". The 101 MW wind farm is being built in the province of Québec in eastern Canada and will supply regional households with green energy from December 2014.
This project is one of the first long-term financing structures for a Canadian wind farm that comprises funds from both institutional investors and bank loans. Alongside KfW IPEX-Bank, further investors involved in financing the onshore wind farm include The Manufacturers Life Insurance Company and Caisse de Dépôt et Placement du Québec.
Export of modern plant technology from Germany
German company Enercon from Aurich, a long-standing customer of KfW IPEX-Bank, is supplying its ultra-modern E-92 wind turbines, each with a capacity of 2.35 megawatts, outside of Europe for the first time. Enercon is also responsible for constructing and installing the 43 turbines, and will maintain them for a period of 15 years.
The project of the Canadian firms Eolectric Club, L.P. and Fiera Axium Infrastructure Canada Limited Partnership comprises a total investment volume of more than CAD 300 million (roughly EUR 240 million). The regenerative energy will be bought by Hydro Quebec, the energy utility in the province. Hydro Quebec has signed a 20-year power purchase agreement with the project company.
Third wind farm financing project in Canada
Vents du Kempt was the third financing project of a Canadian wind farm: Previously, KfW IPEX-Bank took on a leading role in an international banking consortium to finance the construction and operation of Seigneurie de Beaupré 2&3 wind farm, also in Québec. Wind energy technology from German manufacturer Enercon was also used here.
