  • EUR 150 million for the electricity and district heating network in 2026/2027
  • Use of KfW programmes 293 and 148 to support the energy transition in Germany
  • Strengthening municipal energy infrastructure and security of supply in the Nuremberg metropolitan region

KfW IPEX-Bank is providing its customer, N-ERGIE Aktiengesellschaft, with a KfW promotional loan of EUR 150 million as the on-lending bank. The funding will be used to finance investments in the electricity distribution network and the district heating network for the years 2026 and 2027 – including network expansion, network upgrades and substations in the Nuremberg metropolitan area and large parts of Middle Franconia.

The funds are being provided through KfW programmes 293, ‘Climate Action Campaign for Corporates’, and 148, ‘Investment Loan for Municipal and Social Enterprises’. The current financing takes the form of a bilateral individual financing arrangement between KfW IPEX-Bank and N-ERGIE.

The financing contributes directly to the regional energy transition. The investments are primarily directed towards modernising and reinforcing the grids to accommodate more renewable energy and to support the electrification of heating and transport – for example, through the expansion of infrastructure for electric mobility and heat pumps.

“We are supporting N-ERGIE in expanding electricity and district heating networks in a targeted manner to meet the requirements of the energy and heating transition,” says Dr Velibor Marjanovic, Member of the Management Board of KfW IPEX-Bank. “In doing so, we strengthen municipal infrastructure, promote climate-friendly energy supply in Germany and contribute to the investment capacity of an important municipal utility network.”

Background: N-ERGIE
N-ERGIE is the municipal energy and water utility for the city of Nuremberg. Through its subsidiary, N-ERGIE Netz GmbH, it supplies large parts of Middle Franconia with electricity and gas, and additionally supplies the city of Nuremberg with drinking water and district heating.

“Reliable, long-term financing is crucial for our investment programme,” explains Maik Render, Spokesman of the Executive Board of N-ERGIE Aktiengesellschaft. “Our collaboration with KfW IPEX-Bank under the KfW programmes gives us the financial strength to systematically modernise our networks and to further develop the energy supply in Nuremberg and the region in a sustainable manner.”
