  • EUR 250 million for investment in Berlin’s electricity distribution network
  • Financing supports the energy transition and climate targets of Berlin

KfW IPEX-Bank is providing up to EUR 250 million to BEN Berlin Energie und Netzholding GmbH. The funds are earmarked for extensive investment in Berlin’s electricity grid, which is operated by its subsidiary Stromnetz Berlin GmbH.

With this financing, KfW IPEX-Bank is making a significant contribution to the modernisation and needs-based expansion of Berlin’s electricity grid. The funds will enable targeted investments in grid reinforcement and expansion and therefore the connection of renewable energies, data centres and electromobility. By 2030, BEN is planning investments of around EUR 3.6 billion in the expansion and strengthening of the grid infrastructure.

Since the re-municipalisation of Stromnetz Berlin GmbH in 2021, this is already the second time that KfW IPEX-Bank has provided funding to BEN, underscoring the close and trusting cooperation between the parties.

“We are pleased to support the State of Berlin in consistently aligning its electricity grid with the requirements of the energy transition and digitalisation,” said Dr Velibor Marjanovic, member of the Management Board of KfW IPEX-Bank. “This will create the basis for a reliable and climate-friendly energy supply to the capital region and further strengthen Berlin’s position within the European energy system.”
