Green loan for Austrian Federal Railways: KfW IPEX-Bank finances new electric multiple units

KfW IPEX-Bank is participating in the financing of new electric multiple units (EMUs) for ÖBB-Personenverkehr AG (Austrian Federal Railways) through a green loan amounting to EUR 150 million.

The new EMUs will help ÖBB implement its sustainability strategy as well as the Sustainable Finance Framework with regard to the green project category “Clean Transportation”. In addition, the project contributes to the EU’s goal of clean transport in accordance with the Green Loan Principles. This project is in the European Community's interest and also receives financing from the European Investment Bank (EIB). The financing has a term of 15 years.

“We are delighted to once again support ÖBB-Personenverkehr AG with our financing and thereby advance the transport transition in Europe,” explained Andreas Ufer, Member of the Management Board of KfW IPEX-Bank. “Rail transport plays a crucial role in decarbonising the transport sector, which is why we are financing sustainable rail vehicles worldwide.”

ÖBB Personenverkehr AG Managing Director Heinz Freunschlag: "We are delighted we were able to successfully conclude further financing with KfW IPEX-Bank. This will allow us to continue our extensive procurement and investment programme as we develop a modern, comfortable and high-capacity train fleet."

The new trains are intended to further improve the quality of service and attractiveness of rail passenger transport and so motivate more passengers to switch from cars to trains.
