Strengthening value creation and industrial resilience

This strategic ambition of KfW IPEX-Bank is demonstrated particularly well by two current financing cases. By supporting internationally oriented investment and infrastructure projects, it is effectively reinforces industrial value chains, technological fields of expertise and cross-border networking between European companies. Both projects contribute to expanding production capacities, increasing the power to innovate and boosting sustainable infrastructure in Germany and Europe, thus securing long-term competitiveness. By structuring and financing projects like this, the Bank underlines its self-image as an active partner for Germany and Europe as resilient and future-oriented places to do business.

    Progress in practice

    1. Benefit

In this case, money is not flowing into new plants built on greenfield sites, but instead is used to “repower” existing wind farms: Old turbines will be replaced with more powerful ones. This means that existing infrastructure is modernised and existing space is used efficiently.

    2. Target

The objective is: Repowering will be used to quadruple the output at over half of the 37 wind farms by 2028 and increase the installed capacity to 3 gigawatts. This will generate large quantities of renewable energy in a quick and scalable way.

    3. Impact

This large-scale financing shows other investors, banks and market participants that renewables are no longer a niche market, but an established practice - this creates trust and leverage for further projects.

    1. Transport revolution

The modernisation and expansion of efficient, low-emission rail infrastructure are key elements of the transport revolution and sustainable mobility in Germany. As part of a bilateral loan agreement, KfW IPEX-Bank is providing almost EUR 300 million for the Rhine-Ruhr S-Bahn railway network to finance the procurement of modern, electrically powered multiple units and thus support attractive, climate-friendly mobility offers in urban areas.

    2. Resilience

The project increases the resilience and reliability of the regional rail network. New multiple units and modern infrastructure enhance operational stability, reduce breakdowns and maintenance times, thereby securing continuous operation for millions of passengers. Especially in densely populated urban areas like the Rhine-Ruhr region, this contributes to the stability of the entire mobility system.

    3. Environment

The electrification and modernisation of the S-Bahn fleet directly reduces CO₂ emissions compared to diesel-powered multiple units and promotes the use of renewable sources of energy. At the same time, noise emissions are reduced and the efficiency of existing infrastructure is improved as more effective multiple units provide more capacity on the same rail routes. The project thus links the environmentally friendly modernisation of transport with the sustainable use of existing resources.
