KfW IPEX-Bank Finances Next-Generation Bulk Carriers for Northern Europe

Modern bulk carrier

KfW IPEX-Bank is providing EUR 79.3 million in financing for the construction of two next-generation self-unloading bulk carriers that will support the transportation of construction materials across Europe and international export markets.

“The financing enables the transition towards more efficient maritime transport for the building materials logistics sector,” says Aida Welker, Member of the Management Board of KfW IPEX-Bank. “This ensures that new technologies, such as dual-fuel propulsion systems, are deployed where they deliver the greatest added value: in day-to-day operations.”

The vessels will be owned by a joint venture bringing together Hartmann Schiffsbeteiligungen GmbH & Co. KG and The CSL Group Inc. and will operate under a long-term charter agreement with Mibau Stema Shipping ApS, wholly owned subsidiary of Mibau Stema Group GmbH.

With a maximum cargo capacity of 44,000 tonnes each, the new vessels are designed to combine operational efficiency with future fuel flexibility. Equipped with dual-fuel engines, the vessels can operate on conventional fuels while being ready to utilise biofuels and green methanol as these lower-carbon fuel options become more widely available.

The vessels incorporate advanced technology that will enhance the efficiency of maritime transport for construction materials. Their design achieves an Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) performance 3.5% better than the reference line for comparable vessels, exceeding current efficiency requirements.
